IMMARBE'S SPONSORSHIPS
As part of its new policy of direct involvement
in the community as well as the protection of the environment in Belize,
IMMARBE has decided to sponsor the following:
- THE BELIZE AUDUBON SOCIETY
IMMARBE are Gold Corporate Sponsors of this Society
which takes its name from the great 19th Century Naturalist, John
James Audubon. It “is a non-governmental membership organization
dedicated to the sustainable management of Belize’s natural
resources through leadership and strategic partnerships with stakeholders
in order to create a balance between people and the environment.”
To achieve its aims and objectives, the Belize Audubon Society undertakes
a variety of activities within its main programmes: advocacy, environmental
education and protected areas management.
In 1986, the Belize Audubon Society became the
first Belizean member of the World Conservation Union, the world’s
largest environment organization, based in Switzerland. The Society
is also a member of the Flora and Fauna Preservation Society in
the United Kingdom and is a Partner Designate of Birdlife International.
As part of its own eco-shipping policy, with effect
from 1st January 2003, IMMARBE introduced a 15% rebate on the Annual
Tonnage Tax for any vessels of 7501 GT and above as well as for
any self-propelled tankers of up to 7500 GT which attain certification
for the Green Award or the ISO 14001 Environmental Standards for
each year during which they hold a valid certificate relating thereto.
Belize is the first Shipping Registry to have introduced such an
incentive.
- LA RUTA MAYA BELIZE RIVER CHALLENGE
IMMARBE are Corporate Sponsors of this
grueling 4-day canoe race traveling 175 miles along the Belize
Old River from the historic Hawksworth Bridge in the town of San
Ignacio in the foothills of the Maya Mountains to the Belcan Bridge
in Belize City. There are three night stops as the race progresses:
Banana Bank Lodge on the first night, Russel’s Place in Bermudian
Landing on the second night and at the Old River Tavern in Burrell
Boom on the third night.
We are pleased to report that IMMARBE’s
canoe paddled by 3 Belizeans has won the prize in the Pleasure Division in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
The Belize River Valley is one of Belize’s
great natural resources and a tributary to the Caribbean Sea which
feeds the major ecosystem, the Great Belize Barrier Reef, a World
Heritage site. The Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge is also involved
in the conservation of the Belize River on which this race takes
place.

- 1ST PRIZE OF THE CROSS COUNTRY CYCLING RACE ON 10TH APRIL
2004
Once again, IMMARBE is sponsoring the 1st Prize
for this race which is the high point of the Belize Cycling Association’s
calendar. Cross Country Cycle racing started in Belize in 1928.
Nowadays, competitors cycle the 139 miles from Belize City to San
Ignacio and the finish back in Belize City. Although participants
are mainly Belizean, cyclists from USA, Mexico, Guatemala, Salvador
and other Central American States also take part.

- SCHOLARSHIP AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BELIZE COMMENCING AUGUST
2003
IMMARBE’s scholarship includes the payment
of tuition fees and related educational expenses for one student
during a two-year period commencing August 2003 whilst studying
full time for a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.
