General Information

Representative

Any person of legal age or their duly authorized representative, or a body company/corporate may apply to register a vessel by submitting a properly completed application to any of IMMARBE’s offices worldwide. 

Shipowner Eligibility

There are no requirements concerning local ownership or participation in ownership. 

English Language  

All registration documents must be submitted in the English language or, if they are in a foreign language, they must be accompanied by an official English translation thereof. 

Legalization

If an original document is to be submitted, a notary public or other recognized and authorized public official must certify the authenticity of the signature(s) that appear(s) on the document as well as the authority of the person(s) executing the document. 

If a certified copy is to be submitted, a notary public or other recognized and authorized public official must certify the authenticity of the signature(s) that appear on the document as well as the authority of the person(s) executing the document and must certify that the document is a true copy of its original. 

Belize is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention; and official documents can be accepted duly apostilled.  

Extension of Registration   

Provisional registration status is valid for a period of six months, all prescribed documents must be submitted to obtain permanent status. Failure to accomplish this will carry an automatic penalty fee for non-submission of original documents.  

An extension period of three months can be obtained if all documents for permanent registration are not submitted within the provisional period at a relative cost.  

A maximum of two extensions can be granted on a vessel registration status.

Age limit for New Registration

The age limit guideline for new registrations was reduced from 25 years to 20 years. This age limit applies to all vessels except yachts, fishing vessels, non-propelled barges, special registrations, and new registrations which are immediately chartered out to a foreign registry. At the discretion of the Head office, the age limit of 20 years may be exceeded in exceptional circumstances based on the vessel’s previous detention record, the ship owner/operators’ safety records, the area of intended operation, and the intended trade.

INMARSAT Identification Number

All requests pertaining to the obtainment of an INMARSAT identification number should be requested directly from Marine Radio Systems in Hong Kong as Belize’s only authorized PSA (Point of Service Activation).
