Technical Certificates

Exemption, Waivers, Equivalents, etc.

IMMARBE ships in compliance with the requirements of any Mandatory Instrument can be granted exemptions, waivers, equivalents, etc. on a case-by-case basis and are subject to certain conditions and limitations. The technical department granted these certificates, exemptions, waivers and equivalents, after a thorough review of the circumstances and an assessment of the risks involved for the ships.

Ships can be issued an “exemption certificate” which refers to the complete or partial exemption of a ship from certain requirements or standards due specific circumstances or conditions. A Belize registered ship may be exempt from certain requirements if it is engaged in a specific type of operation that makes compliance impractical. “Waivers certificate” refers to the temporary suspension of a requirement or standard due to existing trading area (i.e. special areas as defined by the MARPOL Convention) or unforeseen circumstances, such as a shortage of certain equipment or materials needed to comply with a requirement. The “equivalent certificate” refers to an alternative standard or requirement that is deemed to be an equivalent to the original requirement. In a such circumstances, a Belize registered ship may be allowed to comply with an alternative standard if it can be shown that the alternative standard provides an equivalent level of safety or performance.
