Summary:
Belize ratified the MLC and as such IMMARBE became a MLC ratified Administration on 8 July 2014. Resolution DG-004- The Maritime Labour Convention, is the legal instrument utilized as a domesticated version of the MLC in Belize. Part (B) (2) of this regulation expresses that; all seafarers seeking to be employed or engaged in any capacity on board every Belize seagoing ship, and which is ordinarily engaged in commercial maritime operations must hold a valid Medical Certificate attesting that they are medically fit to operate in whatever capacity they may be intended to function on-board and are assessed by Belize approved Doctors either local or international. (See attached list of Belize-approved Doctors annex (2)).
- If based in Belize,
- Doctors must be fully registered with the Belize Ministry of Health in accordance with the Medical Practitioners Registration Act CAP 318 of the laws of Belize and hold a valid Licence to Practice.
- Must apply to IMMARBE by filling out the Doctors Application form (see attached annex 4); to be vetted by the Director of Health Services and approved by the Senior Deputy Registrar.
- If based outside Belize:
- Be a qualified and officially registered medical practitioner from one of the Belize-approved countries.
- Be entitled to practice in the country or territory in which that practitioner is based, and be duly registered with the competent Authority and listed in the register of recognized medical practitioners maintained by that country. (See Guidance on the issuance of Belize medical certificates).
